In 2007 the residents voted to change the town's name from Dover Township to Toms River, which made sense both because there is another Dover Township in the state of New Jersey and because the local name was Toms River all along. Yes, there is an actual Toms River, along the southern edge of town. Toms River is the county seat for our lovely Ocean County.

The township emcompasses Toms River proper as well as many areas on our side of the bridge: Ocean Beach I, Ocean Beach II and Ocean Beach III, Seacrest Beach, Chadwick Beach, Chadwick Beach Island, Silver Beach, Normandy Beach and Ortley Beach.
