Point Pleasant Borough is home to over 18,000 proud year-round residents. It is bordered on the north by the Manasquan River and on the south by Beaver Dam Creek, and only minutes away to the east is the awesome and beautiful Atlantic Ocean. The Point Pleasant Canal was added in 1924, connecting the Manasquan River/Atlantic Ocean to the Metedeconk River/Barnegat Bay as part of the famous Inland Waterway by which boats can navigate all the way to Florida. This means, by the way, that the eastern part of Point Pleasant Borough, all of Point Pleasant Beach and all areas south to Island Beach State Park are officially surrounded by flowing water and is an island; the debate has raged for decades whether our area is truly an island or a peninsula. I vote for "Island"! Incorporated in 1920, Point Pleasant Borough is 3.5 square miles of families, schools and businesses that merit your utmost attention. Known as "West Point Pleasant" until the mid-1950's, (and still called that by some of the multi-generational families within), it has a proud heritage of seamanship. The White Lawn Cemetery on Trenton Avenue dates back to the Borough's origins and holds an ancient monument inscribed "Unknown Dead of the Sea" marking the victims of shipwrecks off the local coastline. Point Pleasant Borough was originally known for boat building, farming and logging. The Leni Lenape native americans called this area the "Land of Tall Timber" for hundreds of years before settlers arrived, and indeed, the Borough once provided cedar, pine and oak by freighter up Beaver Dam Creek for the paper industry. Point Pleasant Borough is a lovely shore town that is rightfully part of our Jersey Shores' waterfront communities!
