The Borough of Island Heights is a unique and beautiful town that borders Toms River Township on the north and west, Gilford Creek to the northeast, Barnegat Bay on the east and the Toms River (yes, there is an actual river called 'Toms River' that started it all) on the south. It has a true neighborhood feel where people get to know each other and enjoy their community.
Part of Island Heights' great charm is that, although it is a water community similar to those you can find 'across the bridge' in Lavallette, Bay Head and Seaside Park, most of the Borough is on very high ground. This not only assures dry basements and full-growth trees (both a rarity in some of our island areas) but fantastic water views for a good portion of the town.
Another considerable part of Island Heights' attraction is the culture... Island Heights is the home of an artist's guild that gathers wonderfully creative artists and crafters as well as those people who appreciate such beauty. Each winter the Methodist Church asks a handful residents to open their homes to a Christmas Tour, a fundraiser that invites guests to visit beautifully decorated homes during the holidays.
Island Heights boasts sandy beaches, a marina, and a picturesque pavillion and boardwalk near the boat docks on the river. It also has it's own post office (and zip code), police and fire departments, and grade school (kindergarten through 6th grade). The Heights is a 'sending district', meaning that the older children are bussed to nearby East Dover (Toms River) middle and high schools to continue their education. (This is a standard setup for many of our shore towns who have no room for high schools within their own boundaries.) You can find everything from lovely quaint cottages all the way to stately 3-story homes of grandeur in this quiet, well loved community.
